About Hawaiian quilts

The Hawaiian quilt form typically contains three components:

  • It is a "whole cloth" quilt, i.e., generally it is made from two large single pieces of fabric
  • Its generally floral design is made from folding one of the fabrics multiple times and cutting out the image, snowflake style—then appliquéd to the second, background fabric.
  • The quilting then outlines, in successive, parallel lines, both around the image in the background, and within the image. This is called "echo" quilting.
